‘inanna relegated to a generic fertility goddess today’
*Additionally, the myth can be described as a union of Inanna with her own “dark side”, her twin sister-self, Ereshkigal, as when she ascends it is with Ereshkigal’s powers, while Inanna is in the underworld it is Ereshkigal who apparently takes on fertility powers, and the poem ends with a line in praise, not of Inanna, but of Ereshkigal. It is in many ways a praise-poem dedicated to the more negative aspect’s of Inanna’s domain, symbolic of an acceptance of the necessity of death to the continuance of life. It can also be interpreted as being about the psychological power of a descent into the unconscious, realizing one’s own strength through an episode of seeming powerlessness, and/or an acceptance of one’s own negative qualities, as it is by Joseph Campbell.
Since Inanna embodies the traits of independence, self-determination and strength in an otherwise patriarchal Sumerian pantheon, she has become the subject of feminist theory.[17] Indeed, in one analysis of “Inanna and the huluppu tree”, the author points out how she was implicitly “tamed and controlled”, even “demoted”, implying her prior importance as a female role model.

inanna (lady of the sky) is a goddess of love and war.
but i drew the name due to the story of her unusual
descent to the underworld.
inanna embarks on this journey claiming to view her
brother-in-law’s funeral rites. however; inanna may have
intended to conquer the underworld. ereshkigal, queen
of the realm, treats her w/ suspicion.
in order to enter the underworld, ereshkigal requests
that inanna remove a piece of clothing or jewelry @
each gate. after 7 gates she is symbolically stripped of
her power.
inanna anticipated potential failure, & according to plan
was rescued 3 day’s later w/ enki’s help.
I’ve been considering names for my ‘marcy’ from the skelanimals collection. I believe ‘nanna’ fits.
i’ve been calling my stuffed animal, ‘nanna’ ever since i purchased the doll. but the name is really a shortened & cute version of inanna.
How Marcy Became A Skelanimal
Marcy would swing and hang.
Each morning out of bed she sprang.
Her tail was sleek and strong.
She hung for hours long.
She bragged about the strength of her tail.
If all the monkeys pulled, it would stick like a nail.
The challenge was met the very next morning.
Only the tail was left; the monkeys now mourning.
